Enlargement of the prostate is a condition that is common among men once old age starts kicking in – usually occurring in men 60 years and onwards with rare cases at 50. This common disorder is the noncancerous prostate enlargement (prostatitis). This is an inflammation of the prostate gland.
The prostate’s function is to produce seminal fluid that carries the sperm during intercourse. It’s a gland that is walnut in shape located below the bladder; and its growth starts to kicks in at puberty and this continues on. Symptoms, most typically, start at forty and the related problems begin to show at sixty years.
Signs and Symptoms
An inflamed prostate presses against the urethra, causing the bladder to weaken and urination difficult. The common symptoms include;
- Pain when ejaculating.
- Dribbling which is uncontrolled after urination.
- Burning sensation on urination.
- Feeling pain at the back of the scrotum.
- Incapability of emptying the bladder.
- Urinating frequently – mostly at night.
- Starting to urinate becomes difficult.
Prostate problems are serious and should not be ignored. It can worsen, becoming painful and also bring in serious complication like kidney and bladder infections.
Remedy
A change in diet helps to ease some discomfort and in rare cases minimises the development of prostate cancer. The home methods of treating enlargement of the prostate are different. However, regardless of the method you use, you need to have immense patience if you want to achieve the best solution.
- Saw palmetto, an herbal remedy from palm trees is used to ease urinary symptoms. It’s also effective in easing BPH symptoms.
- Pumpkin seeds are essential in treating urination difficulties. The seeds have diuretic properties with a lot of zinc that helps build and repair the immune system. Removing the shells and eating them raw is the best way of enjoying them. You can also try by crushing a handful of fresh seed and placing them in an empty pint jar. Fill it with boiling water and strain the seeds and enjoy the cup of pumpkin seed tea.
- Corn silk is a remedy used to help relieve prostate enlargement symptoms. It can be recycled. Put the silk in a cup, pour hot water and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain and enjoy.
- Fish high in Omega oils also is healthy. Fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel are rich in omega oil. Soy-based foods are rich in phytoestrogens which help reduce testosterone production.
- Regular physical exercise is also important as it improves blood flow in the body. Therefore you should take a day to do exercise and keep healthy and keep the doctor away. Drink water at regular intervals to improve and clean up the flow of blood to the body.
- Use of herbs from prickly pear cactus, flaxseed or stinging nettle helps to relieve prostate problems. Studies also show that pollen extracts from rye grass relaxes the urinary tube muscles helping the muscles of the bladder to contract making urine flow easy. This also reduces dribbling after urination and frequent night urinations. It also helps by reducing the size of the prostate
- Research also suggests that African wild potato, a South African star grass has an important extract called Harzol which may provide ease from urinary symptoms. This is because it has high contents of beta-sitosterols. It is however not advisable for diabetic patients since it lowers sugar levels in the blood.
Sometimes muscle spasms involving the surrounding tissue of the prostate may appear as a prostate symptom. This condition is known as prostadynia. This can be simply relieved by taking warm baths.
There are different ways of coping with these symptoms;
- If you are obese, try losing weight naturally and reduce the quantity of fat you consume.
- Ejaculation removes prostatic fluid and shrinks the prostate; therefore indulge in safe sex frequently.
- Satisfy any urges of urination that you may have in night while asleep.
- Regular exercise is important too. Involve yourself in exercise as frequently as you can.
- Consume very little fluids for the night time i.e. after 7.00pm
- Avoid liquids containing caffeine especially after dinner.
- Take hot baths and soak for 15 minutes twice a day.
- Avoid sitting for a prolonged period of time. Since a man sitting on his prostate for long hours puts pressure on the abdominal and prostate glands, the onset of the symptoms may require you to lie down or take a stroll.
