‘You reap what you sow’

You must have heard the famous saying. The same applies to your heart. While it is busy pumping blood, organizing functions and establishing a proper environment in the body, it becomes our responsibility to treat it well. With the increasing workload and schedules, we do not have time to care for it. Luckily, what we have to do is change our tiny-whiny regular habits.

  1. Regular Exercise– Even if you have million reasons to not hit a gym or run in the neighborhood, search for one reason to make it happen. Exercise helps in blood pressure regulation and smooth circulation.
  2. A big ‘No’ to skipping breakfast– It is scientifically proven that people who skip breakfast are 27% more prone to acquiring Coronary artery diseases. Skipping breakfast can also lead to high blood pressure, increased cholesterol levels and obesity.
  3. Oral Health– A stringent oral routine is a must if you want to avoid coronary diseases. The bacteria accumulating in the mouth can cause blood clotting in the arteries leading to other complications of Heart. Keep your teeth shiny and notice your heart being cheerful.
  4. Bye-Bye Stress – When you have so much of the unwanted baggage in your head, a hormone called Cortisol is released. This can cause fluctuations in blood pressure levels, cholesterol and sugar levels. Avoid stress as much as possible. Turn to meditation and yoga.
  5. Regulating Salt consumption – Maintaining a consistent low intake of sodium can help prevent water retention in the body. Increased fluid levels in the body can increase the workload on Heart and Kidney to flush out toxins.
  6. Quit Smoking and Alcohol – The presence of nicotine in Cigarettes is the major cause of cardiovascular problems. Accumulation of nicotine over time blocks arteries leading to Ischemia or other heart disorders. Alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure, weaken heart muscle and elevate the heart rate abnormally.
  7. Breathing Exercises- Apart from the physical exercise regime, putting your lungs at work can help your heart. Taking a deep breath and holding it for a while before slowly releasing can help ease the blood vessels for better circulation. It is a good exercise for the thoracic region.
  8. Eat Healthy– Munching on food when you are bored is the biggest reason for quicker cardiovascular disorders. Food is always an important parameter to stay healthy. Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, less spices, and more fibers to maintain stable heart health. Chicken ‘Liver’ is a boon to cardio health.
  9. Sleep is the Key– A proper seven to eight hours sleep is essential for smooth biological functions. As per studies conducted on 3,000 adults, ones who slept less than six hours per night are more likely to suffer with cardiovascular problems than the others.
  10. Regular Check-ups– You must always keep a track of your cardiovascular health. Annual check-ups help to keep risk factors at bay and ensure that you do not have to worry about a stroke.

Like it is popularly stated, prevention is always better than cure. Make these minor changes in your lifestyle and you do not have to worry about the Heart woes.
