As monsoon is set to make a thundering entry, the weather seems to have become fairly pleasant, wiping away the hot summer blues. It is a challenge to stay indoors when the weather turns cloudy and cool drizzles follow. But as the surroundings turn vibrant and green, our skin and hair bear the brunt of humidity and pollution. Hair fall might increase in this season due to the high humidity and polluted rain water which makes the hair brittle. If you have used chemical colour or other intense hair products, damage to hair follicles might intensify.

Another reason for hair damage in monsoon is the excessive use of hair dryer. Since the climate is damp, hair take time to dry out post wash, we tend to use the dryer more than usual. This make the hair dry and weak. But don’t let the rain wash out your mood because here are some tried and tested remedies to protect your tresses.

Short hair oil application because your roots are already wet most of the times because of sweat and prone for more hair loss and oiling further makes your hair roots fragile and amenable for hair loss. Also eat protein rich diet.

Keep your hair dry
The impulse to get drenched is too good to resist, but protect your hair with a shower cap or a rain cap. The scalp is most vulnerable because any damage to scalp will affect the hair roots. Hair roots carry the nutrition to the tips, damaged roots will make the hair weak and it falls off easily.

Oil Champi
Nothing works better on hair than a good leisurely oil champi. Take coconut oil in a small bowl, add 2-3 drops of castor oil and heat this for 5-10 seconds. If you are heating on the burner, don’t let this mixture smoke. When the oil is warm enough to dip your finger in it, add one spoon olive oil. Take a hair massage with this warm oil mixture and loosely clasp the hair inside a shower cap for atleast 2 hours. Wash off with a mild shampoo. This will fortify the roots and boost hair growth. The oil will retain the moisture and revitalize the strands.

Let those tresses loose
Since your hair might tend to stay damp, tying your hair in the monsoon will make it limp and frizzy. Also there is a risk of scalp infection. Let your hair loose and even if you must tie your hair then go for a loose bun or ponytail.

Eat healthy
The season calls for fried pakodas and the spicy street food. But too much salt and spice is not good for hair health. So strike a balance here. While you enjoy the fried fritters make sure you consume equal portions of salads, fruits and alkaline foods everyday. Your food should meet your daily requirement of calcium and protein. Eggs, milk, fish, sprouts, hung curd are rich sources of calcium and protein.

Take a break from styling
Temporarily, keep aside the hair styling products and tools. They are too harsh on your hair and as the hair are already vulnerable due to the season, you might want to just clean and pack these products for a while. In case the occasion demands, try and go natural. Find natural alternative products and go for subtle natural styles that will blend with your look. Use natural home-made hair masks to maintain scalp health.

Try these tips and go embrace the season in full vigour. And the most important tip is to stay hydrated. You might not feel thirst as you did in summer, but don’t compromise on daily intake of water. If you are going for weekend trip, make sure you have a leave-on conditioner.
