‘You don’t wake up easy even after 7-8 hours of sleep… you do not feel fresh even if you have slept whole night… You feel sleepy the whole day… You never have enough of sleep…’
If you have come down agreeing to most of the above lines, then there is something you should know about. These are the signals of Excessive daytime sleepiness. This is a condition where chronic sleepiness persists in the daytime even after adequate or even excess sleep in the night before. This does not relate to the regular case of feeling sleepy during the daytime. EDS marks an absolute lack of energy during the daytime, which hampers routine life and activities.
In worst case circumstances it can even cause stroke, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. EDS demands consulting an expert and timely treatment.
There are a few common causes identified of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness:
- High-fat diet:Studies have shown that men consuming high fat diet tend to feel sleepier during the day time. They even report sleep problems at night and are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea. It also further signifies that inappropriate sleep and feeling sleepy during the day was related to lack of energy, causing increased cravings for high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, which would again link to poor sleep. Therefore, the poor diet-and-sleep pattern becomes a vicious cycle.
- Sleep Disorder: Suffering from sleep disorders, be it narcolepsy which causes inability to maintain a normal sleep-wake routine or be it hypersomnia causing excessive sleep, lasting even for days. These disorders can contribute to EDS and its related effects.
- Marijuana: A study shows that the use of marijuana is linked to excessive daytime sleepiness among adolescents. The researchers found that 10 percent of adolescents sent for evaluation of excessive daytime sleepiness with testing results consistent with narcolepsy had urine drug screens positive for marijuana.
- Cognitive deterioration: In the growing age, a condition of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia may lead to Excessive Daytime Sleepiness. A research also propounded that a night sleep of more than nine hours or less than five hours was related to lower mental ability.
Sleep is usually taken as a mandatory casual activity of the day. But it is to be well understood that Sleep is the repair and recharge mechanism of the body. Any abnormality in this process can lead to significant breakdown and failures. Hence, sleep related conditions should be dealt with equal promtness and medical attention from our individual ends.
