10 Ways to Calm Down

Everyone gets stressed out more than once in awhile and sometimes your anxiety can change your mood for the worst. What should you do? Stop stressing out! Here are some techniques to help ease your anxiety in a difficult situation.

  1. Yoga
Yoga enables you to focus on your mind body and spirit as one entity. It challenges your physical strength, but brings you to a meditation state through controlled breathing. Look for a local studio or try finding some do-it-at-home yoga videos on Youtube.
  2. Retreat to a Safe Space
Choose a place in either your home or outside that enables you to relax. Whether you’ve had a hard day at work or a stressful social interaction, there needs to be a place that you can always go to calm yourself. Pick somewhere where you can be alone and meditate.
  3. Take a Hot Bubble Bath
These aren’t only for kids. With the right soap, a soothing hot bubble bath moisturizes your skin and can even be good for your health. A hot bath can relieve over-stretched muscles, small sports injuries, and joint pain that can arise from exercising. When a tense body enters a hot bath, the hot water relaxes the muscles, putting your body in a soothing state. They can also reduce headaches that may be caused by stress.
  4. A Quick Do-It-Yourself Hand Massage
If you’re stressed out on the job, this is a quick go to method to soothe yourself. Simply press a thumb of one hand on your palm and massage it. The effect will give you a little peace of mind.
  5. Closing Your Eyes
It’s okay to disconnect from the world for a few seconds to close your eyes. By doing this, you will be able to focus more clearly on what is stressing you out to begin with. Sometimes, being overstimulated by your surroundings can make these problems worse.
  6. Wall Exercise
By placing the weight of your body onto a solid, immobile wall, you will feel a stabilizing force from gravity, which can help to calm down your anxiety. Flatten your palms and then push against it while sitting on the floor. Do this for intervals of 5-10 seconds.
  7. Stretching
A quick stretch allows you to release tension in your muscles and focus on taking deep breaths. Whenever you have a bit of free time, raise both of your arms to the ceiling while taking a deep inhale. Take a deep exhale as you move to stretch them. You will feel calmer in no time.
  8. Hug
Just a ten second hug can change biochemical and physiological forces in your body, which can ultimately lessen stress, fatigue, loneliness and depression. So give that person you love a hug right now! Don’t have anyone, don’t sweat it! You can hug yourself. By squeezing your belly and back at the same time, you give your body a comforting feeling.
  9. Mantra Meditation
Mantra meditation, entails mentally repeat a calming word, or mantra. The repetition of the mantra will replace anxious thoughts and help you to calm yourself. Find a quiet place to sit, close your eyes to begin meditating.
  10. Mindful Meditation
With mindful meditation, you increase your awareness of the present moment. By focusing only on what you are experiencing, like your breathing or feet standing still on the floor, you keep your thoughts from wandering about.
